We can feel ourselves rotting on a brand new episode of Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out covering Cronenberg’s latest – and perhaps most personal – work THE SHROUDS from 2024. Vincent Cassel stars as Karsh, a businessman who has developed a technology called a shroud, which allows people to view the corpses of their loved ones after they have been buried. After a targeted attack of his graveyard (including the grave of his late wife), Karsh – with the help of his late wife’s sister and her ex-husband – starts to investigate the motivation behind the attack. It’s dark, oppressive, oddly funny and awfully odd, but is it great? Let’s discuss!
It’s the long awaited return of JodoWOWsky and on this episode we’re headed back to the comic book Jodoverse with the eight-volume Incal spin-off THE TECHNOPRIESTS, originally published from 1998 until 2006. Written by Jodorowsky with art from the immortal Zoran Janjetov, with color from Fred Beltran it follows the journey of Albino, the Supreme Technopriest, and his journey through the Technopriest hierarchy which – surprise – becomes a galaxy-spanning epic of mind-melting proportions. We also with Alejandro Jodorowsky a very happy 95th birthday and take a look at all the latest Jodorowsky news. JOIN US!
The book Alejandro Jodorowsky – Filmmaker and Philosopher by author William Egginton is available here.

It’s the 200th episode of Cinema Smorgasbord, a podcast devoted to obsessively examining the careers of underloved and underappreciated actors and directors. Since we started in 2020 we’ve created over a dozen sub-podcasts devoted to such diverse topics as the careers of Paul Bartel (Bartel Me Something Good), Dick Miller (You Don’t Know Dick), Steve Buscemi (How Do You Do, Fellow Kids?), Jackie Chan (We Do Our Own Stunts), Oliver Reed (Further Reeding), George Kennedy (George Kennedy is my Co-Pilot) and many more, and we can’t thank you enough for joining us on this wonderfully strange trip. On this episode we decided to do something a little different, starting with a lighthearted chat about our thoughts on the podcast as a whole over these last few years, before discussions on two of our favorite, formative films from the 1980s; starting with Martha Coolidge’s brainy comedy REAL GENIUS (picked by Doug) and ending with the Tim Burton-directed delight PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE (picked by Liam). We finish with an announcement of what’s coming in 2024, so stick around, jerks!
