You can’t have an Oliver Reed-themed podcast without eventually dipping into the works of the legendary Ken Russell, and we stick our toes in for the first time with his 1969 melodramatic adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s beloved – and controversial – 1920 novel, Women in Love. Starring Reed alongside Alan Bates, Glenda Jackson and Jennie Linden, the film examines love, sex and death in all manner of permutations, and manages to fit in some notorious nude man-on-man grappling just for fun. We go deep on the film’s explicit queerness, the difficulty of working with temperamental actors (and directors) and so much more. ENJOY!

Gene Wilder directed, wrote and starred in 1977’s THE WORLD’S GREATEST LOVER, a silent-era chuckler about a baker (Wilder) who travels to Hollywood in order to become the next Rudolph Valentino, despite an unfortunate collection of nervous tics. Ken Russell tackles the life of “the great lover” Rudolph Valentino in 1977’s VALENTINO, an occasionally inspired bio-pic that fixates (and speculates) on the silent film star’s much-debated sexuality. On the latest episode of PRAISING KANE we’re looking at the film, its stars, and whether or not it’s Ken Russell-y enough to deserve rediscovery. Welcome to the PREMIERE episode of JODOWOWSKY, a light-hearted, chronological look through the career of actor, writer, poet, playwright, novelist, editor, comics writer, musician, puppeteer, mime, painter, and so much more.. Alejandro Jodorowsky!

In this episode we look at our hopes for the podcast (as well as some concerns) and then discuss Jodorowsky’s early short films, before coming back from a break to discuss his first feature length movie FANDO AND LIS.

Your hosts are Cinema Smorgasbord regulars Doug Tilley (@Doug_Tilley) and Liam O’Donnell (@LiamRulz), but they are joined on this adventure by the always wonderful and incisive Julia Marchese!

Julia is a filmmaker, actor, writer, film programmer and podcaster. Julia’s first film was Out of Print, a documentary about the importance of revival cinema and 35mm to culture. The film has played all over the world in film archives, art house cinemas and universities. The 35mm print of the film is now housed at The Academy Film Archives. Her next project is a short film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “I Know What You Need”. She is the co-host of Horror Movie Survival Guide, a weekly podcast that takes a deep dive into a different horror film each week, focusing on how to become the final girl.
