What’s a George Kennedy-themed podcast without a DISASTER? On this episode of George Kennedy is My Co-Pilot California is hit by the BIG ONE in 1974’s EARTHQUAKE where an all-star cast (including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, Richard Roundtree, Lorne Greene, Geneviève Bujold and – of course – George Kennedy) have to deal with the after-effects of a massive tremor that destroys most of California. Of course, before the quake hits there’s plenty of melodrama and complex relationships (script by Mario Puzo!), but once the earth starts to move things get properly apocalyptic. Our EARTHQUAKE talk is preceded by a short chat about a late-era episode of the television sitcom WINGS featuring George playing a put-upon version of himself! ENJOY!

After the worldwide success of SANTA SANGRE, Jodorowsky was inundated with offers to make horror films, but he found himself more interested in – for the first time – working with a large budget and big stars. His opportunity came in the form of producer Alexander Salkind, who approached Jodo to direct his wife’s script for a project called THE RAINBOW THIEF, starring Omar Sharif, Peter O’Toole and Christopher Lee. The result (nearly) ended Alejandro Jodorowsky’s directing career, with the film barely being released before being dumped onto VHS in the US four years after its completion. But is the final result truly a disaster? On this episode of JODOWOWSKY we’re breaking down the complicated history and tangled legacy of THE RAINBOW THIEF and asking what the heck went wrong. We also pay tribute to the late Cristóbal Jodorowsky, and discuss Jonathan Ross’s 1990 episode of his program For One Week Only devoted to Jodorowsky. Check it out!

Despite his increasing success with comics, Jodorowsky was still reeling from the failure of his Dune project when he decided to adapt Reginald Campbell’s “Poo Lorn of the Elephants” into the disastrous 1980 film TUSK. Disowned by the director (“Don’t see Tusk. I bury the film.”) and nearly impossible to track down in a watchable form, the movie remains an enigma in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s career. On this episode of JodoWOWsky, we look at how TUSK came about, whether it’s the disaster so often reported, whether a better film might be hiding inside the original elements, and how the heck the whole thing fell apart.
